Mission Hills Garden Club Minutes

Wednesday February 20th 2010


The meeting was called to order at 5:30P.M.

In attendance: Scott Borden, Meredith French, Carla Buff, Carol Moseley, Suzanne Sorger, Nancy Carol Carter, Beverly Fritschner, Mary Shelly, Pepper Sutton, Dick Disraeli, Joyce Disraeli, Elaine Wilson, Barbara Strona, Kathleen Stoughton

January minutes approved as corrected with the Ways and Means attachment striken from the minutes.  No attachmenet.


President’s Report(Scott Borden): Forming a nominating committee.  A roster of this year’s board was passed.  Members were to indicate if they would like to be considered to continue on next year with the same appointment.


Vice President’s Report(Meredith French): April’s meeting-Tree of Life will be featured speakers.


Membership(Suzanne Sorger): November’s  meeting had 95 attendees, 11 guests(9 paid.2 passes) and 84 members.  Three attendees joined the club.  The board  noted that consensus didn’t feel that  the incentive of  the guest could apply the fee towards a membership application was made known to guests and suggested that membership look into advertising the fact.


Treasurer(Carol Moseley): statement of operations attached.  Special Events concerned regarding a $69.00 line item-will  meet with Treasurer.


Communications(K. Jones): no report


Posters and Postcards(Sabina Starr): no report ,however, board  members  noticed  posters are posted in the  neighborhood.


Community Projects(Barbara Kocmur): community scholarships in planning stage.


Garden Walk(Meredith French and Kathleen Stoughton): “Kate Sessions and  Her Work”   Next steps: collecting plant lists, using both sides of the bridge,  incentive to return to Mission Hills Nursery, raffle and memory gift, press release by the end of the month, lecture on Kate Sessions, @ Mission Hills Congregational Church.  Board concerns and considerations: avoid using the trolley, possibility of creating a drive through pick-up for tickets(parking, restricts access to Nursery, evidence of prepurchase?, carpool),  (Beverly Fritschner volunteered to brainstorm regarding ticket distribution.) , bringing in a wine tasting company, enough port-o-potties?, tap into past members and service organizations for docents, and serving lunch somewhere on the route(as a fundraiser), schedule meeting with  last years garden walk committee, pass sign up clipboards at the meetings for docents,  D. Quillin will create the host baskets.  


Ways and Means(Elaine Wilson): Fundraiser for engraved tiles in community garden at Ft. Stockton and Goldfinch.

Field Trip to Sierra Madre Wisteria-March 14th in carpools.  www.wisteriafestival.com


Hospitality(Pepper Sutton): need 13 shopping bags for garden walk hosts.


Children’s program(Cheryl Gaidmore): Mary Shelley looking into possibility of assisting in Saturday San Diego Floral Association “Butterfly’s Tea” March 20th.  Mary Shelley to look into how we could participate Family Science Day at Balboa Park.


Historian(Nancy Carol Carter): collecting items for Mission Hills Garden Club exhibit at the Mission Hills Nursery’s 100th anniversary.


Weeding(Marien Kissling): Board acknowledges we need weeders.  Possibility of Saturday Weeding Party?


Coffee in the Garden(Joyce Disraeli): January 30th-4120 Bandidi; February-Scott and Jim’s; April-Mary Shelley’s.


Newsletter(Beverly Frischner): board complimented quarterly newletter.  Would like to include birthdays.  Bi-weekly newsletter(Barbara Strona)-ssend information to her for distribution. It was suggested that extra notification bulletins for coffee in the garden to be sent out the Friday before the event. 


New Business:

Suggested we have a Standard Operating Procedure folder from each Board member to deveop a mentoring/protoge program.  


Dick Disraeli-would like to serve as liason between Mission Hills Town Council and Mission Hills Business District for the Mission Hills Garden Club. 


Board motioned that we do not share the Mission Hills Garden Club’s email address book with outside organizations(Nancy Carol Carter moved, Carole Moseley seconded).  Passed.


Petals for patriots volunteers asked to have the board look into reimbursing for mileage do to the proximity for pick up of the flowers.  Vista is a committment of personal resources.  Club policy needs to be assessed.


Mary Shelley-possible fundraisers and marketing spots: Ruby Heart-reading for children, BID immunizations clinic, Board of California Gardens Inc., Mission Hills Garden Key limes pies.


Barbara Strona-only a welcoming letter with invitation to join the garden club is sent to new neighbors now.


The Meeting was adjourned at 7:00P.M(moved Pepper Sutton, Second Carol Moseley).
